This is a weekly prototype for Major Studio Fall.
I used to play Minecraft a lot when I was a teenager, so I'm particularly interested in sandbox related games, and trying to make a sandbox prototype. The gameplay involves dropping plates in a hexagonal grid and connecting them to form a complete area. You have a stack of piles of plates, use left click to put down boards and right click to rotate them. There is no goal to the game as I wanted it to have a relaxed atmosphere and by clicking you can see your area gradually increase. During the design process I focused mainly on making a extendable hexagonal grid. This is another extension of my square grid from last week. Hexagons are an interesting shape, hexagonal panels don't look as serious as squares and the six sides bring more choices to make. The undulations of the terrain is made by Berlin Noise to give it the appearance of a continuous land of highs and lows. The models for this hexagon comes from kenney, a resource I really like to use in the prototype phase. Right now the mechanics are very basic, making it look like Dorfromantik or some other hexagonal board placement game, but if with more time, I would add more strategic elements to the mechanics, including adding more placement limits, generating more different biomes, like the mountains, seas, etc. into the game.
